Punching errors

Punching errors are a type of coin error that encompasses all production errors of the die that can be found on design elements such as letters, numbers, and other distinctive features. The punching process involves the use of special “punches” that are compressed onto the coin to complete or refine the design elements.
However, errors can arise due to the negligence of the engraver, as the manual addition or refinement of a certain number or letter on the reproducing punch may not be hit in the exact position in which the element should be found, resulting in the reliefs (in incuse on the die) being imprinted in an incorrect position.
