The 1870-S Silver Dollar is one of the rarest silver dollars known, with only a handful of examples believed to exist. H.O. Granberg unveiled his coin publically after forty-four years of its issue during the 1914 American Numismatic Society Exhibition. The initial auction of this coin was recorded in a 1926 Hesslein auction, where the example provided was marked with initials cut into the coin and graded as Fine. In the following auction appearance, these initials were removed.
No official mint record exists regarding the number of 1870-S denominations, which are currently known. The silver dollar and the unique half dime and three-dollar gold piece belong to this category; it’s reasonable to assume that a quarter of this issue was also produced, although its existence is still unknown. It’s worth noting that the half dime was unknown until 1978.
In 2003, James A. Stack’s mint state 62 example of the 1870-S Silver Dollar sold for $1,092,500. This is the only certified coin in Uncirculated condition.
